The College of Marin Foundation Newsletter
Vol. 6 No. 1 October 2004
Foundation
President's Message
As the new President of the College of Marin Foundation,
I want to welcome you to a new academic year. The College
of Marin had a great impact on my life as a Tam High School
graduate, Class of ‘73. As a young man, I did not
have the inclination
or desire to apply to a four-year college. College of Marin
provided me the springboard from which my broad interests
could be synthesized in preparation for my transfer to a
four-year school.
During the 70’s, College of Marin offered me the
opportunity to explore a wide variety of academic fields
while completing necessary undergraduate requirements. At
the College I worked with mentor teachers like the late
David Baver and Gordon Chan who inspired and challenged
me to pursue my academic and personal dreams. These types
of experiences have inspired many students at College of
Marin. It is my goal as President of the Foundation to increase
support to students so they can realize their full potential.
I look forward to working with the new College President,
Dr. Fran White, the College Trustees and Foundation Directors.
Together we can educate and inspire students.
A special thanks to all of you who have contributed in
so many ways to making College of Marin a true reflection
of our community’s dream for quality education for
the wide spectrum of students it serves.
In addition, we have within our grasp the opportunity to
help pass Measure C in November, to bring the facilities
and infrastructure of College of Marin into the 21st Century.
The support of individuals like you will be instrumental
in this endeavor. I look forward to working with all of
you in the year to come.
Sincerely,
David A. Schwartz
President, COMF |

College
of Marin President's Message
I wish to thank the College of Marin community for
the warm
welcome I have received since becoming President.
Since I began my tenure in July, I have received support
from faculty, staff, students, and donors. The College
of Marin Foundation has been particularly kind.
The support the College of Marin Foundation provides
is essential to the progress we are pursuing at the
College. Certainly, your financial assistance provides
an opportunity for higher education to many who might
otherwise not be able to afford it. The money does
more than fill financial needs. Your support exhibits
a generosity of spirit that helps build not only opportunity
for students, but also builds an esprit de corps.
I have met many of you already, and look forward
to meeting many more of you in the future.
Together we can make things happen.

College of
Marin Scholarship
Awards Ceremony and Program
On Friday, May 21, 2004 the annual College of Marin Scholarship
Program was held in the Student Services Center on the Kentfield
campus. One hundred and eleven students received scholarships
ranging from $250 to $1,500. Some of our students will be
continuing at the College of Marin; others will be transferring
to the UC schools, state universities, and private colleges.
Some of the students are the first in their family to attend
college. Some are single parents. Most hold down a job,
and many are re-entering school after a hiatus of several
years.
Numerous
students received scholarships in our nursing program, electronic
technology, automotive technology, and court reporting.
The Foundation Scholarship Program exists because of our
donors! If you would like to make a donation to a scholarship
or establish a new scholarship, please contact Margaret
Elliott via email
or call her at 415. 485. 9382 .

Dan Bavosa
Student Aid Fund
In
addition to financial assistance in the form of scholarships,
many College of Marin students also need monetary help with
books, housing, transportation, child care, and even food.
Several years ago a generous donor established the Dan Bavosa
Student Aid Fund in memory of a former student. This special
fund enables the Foundation to give funds to students who
need emergency help and book grants. Even with this ongoing
fund, the College of Marin Financial Aid Office reports
that in the past year, our students had $18 million of unmet
financial need.

MEASURE C IS KEY TO COLLEGE
OF MARIN’S FUTURE
College of Marin has placed a $249.5 million bond issue
on the November 2 ballot to pay for critical facility needs,
including the renovation and modernization of buildings
on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses. 55% of
the vote is needed to pass the bond.
“Measure C is long overdue,” said Wanden Treanor,
President of the Board of Trustees of the Marin Community
College District. “No major renovations or modernizations
have occurred at either campus in the past 30 years,
and many heating, electrical, and other systems have reached
the end of their useful lives. Energy efficiency, disabled
access, and out-dated technology are serious
challenges that we must address. We urge your support
for this ballot measure.”
College of Marin’s facilities are currently ranked
in the bottom 10% of all California community colleges.
College of Marin is the only community college in the greater
Bay Area and the only school district in Marin that hasn’t
previously gone for a facilities bond.
“In an age of technology—at a time when one
of the college’s premier offerings to the community
should be technological—our ability to deliver sophisticated
computer classes and training is seriously hampered by the
lack of current technology,” said Treanor. “Some
of our local kindergarten classrooms are more technologically
advanced than the College facilities. Yet our classrooms
must effectively train today’s workforce.”
To view the proposed improvements please visit www.collegeofmarinbond.org.
The work will be completed under the green building resolution
adopted by the Board for energy conservation and preservation
standards. |
